Mural

The lovely people over at Affiliate Window (who had seen my work at the A4U events over the past three years) asked me to paint them a mural for their London headquarters. Here are some photos of the work as it went along and of course the finished piece.
It felt very strange to be working on something so permanent, as so much of my work is short lived or at least off the cuff and of the moment.
I'm pretty pleased with the result (I had a bit of a stomach bug on the second day so i'm kind of amazed I even finished it). The reproduction doesn't really do it justice, as it doesn't convey the impact an image this size has.
It's situated in the corridor just outside their meeting rooms and on the way to the main office, meaning everybody has to walk passed it.
Affiliate Window have previously been voted one of the top 100 companies to work for, and from all the staff events they hold (on the right hand side of the mural) you can see why. Looks like a lot of fun huh?

I've just bought myself a couple of Pentel Aqua brushes after spotting Dan Berry using one on twitter.
here's my first try using them, they're good fun, though i'm not too accurate with them yet.

I drew this quite a while ago. But it's taken ages for me get round to scanning it and tidy it up - mainly because its kind of huge - bigger than A1 (and I only have an A4 scanner).
I'm not sure what to do with it now, I might get some prints done. Suggestions for an affordable printer in london are more than welcome.

JISC Conference

A really odd one this. The team over at JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) at Bristol University, have been running a virtual conference over the last few days. I was tasked with turning the main talking points from each day into visuals to be used as part of a recapping session the next morning.
These were all drawn off site, each evening after the conference. each one took about 2 hours.
As you can see we didn't really get into the swing of things until day two.

Yesterday I was at the Hilton at Edgware Rd for the annual a4u Expo. This is my third year scribing the event - and the hardest (its not easy to wander around talking to people when you have a horrible sore throat and little voice).

Stratford Station Sketching.

I went sketching today with my brother outside stratford station (after a quick pop into westfield to see what was what - and a rather poor exhibition next to the olympics shop).
I gave the actual sketch to the woman on the stall, which she seemed very happy with.
It's rather rough, but not too bad for you 30mins work. I like the dog, but i'm not to happy with the owner, who had buggered off before i'd finished sketching him.

Basis Technology

Basis Technologies asked me to do some drawing board sketch style illustration for their website, with an aim to bring to life some of the services they provide.
I had a lot of fun doing them, it was a quick process, with a nice amount of energy to it. I also got to try out my new Copic Markers which have nice brush tip, giving the images a nice dip pen feel, with an irregular thickness of line.
These are the first batch, I think there'll be some more coming up.

Recent Graphic Facilitation

As a scribe I often feel like I'm working in a bubble, it's very rare for me to work with other 'creatives' as I'm normally the person brought into a situation to make it feel more creative, often working with people who don't have much experience of being creative (in an arts and crafty way that is).

So this event was a really wonderful experience for me as I was working along side some other Illustrators. I find working with other scribes a really educational experience. Its great to see how other people approach scribing, their stylistic choices, the equipment they use and other valuable tricks of the trade they've stumbled across.

I was really pleased with my work on this one, trying out a few ideas and stylistic things i'd picked up from the other scribes. It's probably a bit lost though as I've had to remove and mess about with the text as the content was some what confidential.

The long image was done with the lovely karolin schnoor check her out - right now. That's an order.

Varndean School Big Idea

So I was asked by some of the guys over at creative partnerships if I'd come and capture an event that was running at Varndean School in Brighton. The event called 'The Big Idea' was a design and technology careers day for the year 8 students. I spent the day running from one end of the school to the other, dropping into all the different session, sketching what was happening and then legging it back to the library to draw up what I'd seen.
As you can see from my finished piece there were lots exciting things happening, and I think the students really enjoyed it, as well as being exposed to many things they'd not seen before - and certainly not considered as careers.
I love doing these kind of events, the kids really love the work and its really great for them to see somebody who makes a living drawing silly cartoons (I get a lot of questions about how I got to do what I do - I just wish I had a better answer than 'kind of by accident'!).

Between work and looking after a two year old, I don't get much time to sketch any more. I used to go out sketching with my brother about once a fortnight, but between his job, college and all the bar work he does, he's even more busy than me.
so while we were away on holiday together (in the south of france) our intention had been to try and find some time to do some sketching. Well it never quite happened, but here's what i managed, an unfinished sketch of the villa we were staying in.

Dinosaur Tooth Fairy

So my cousin's daughter Izzy (second cousins, cousin once removed, who knows) drew me a tooth fairy and a dinosaur, in return I drew her 'the dinosaur tooth fairy'. It was just a quick doodle really, which i then got carried away adding colour and texture to.
She was really happy with it and took it to school to show her friends - no report back on what they thought of it yet.

Graphic Facilitation @ The Hospital Club

I was recently asked to take part in a panel discussion on Graphic Facilitation as part of the hospital club's series of talks run under the name creative capital. I think the whole thing went pretty well and there were some great thought provoking questions:

How can narrative be used in graphic facilitation?
Does graphic facilitation help to make workshop participants act more creatively?
How does a graphic facilitator get in sync with a client?
Are there ways in which a graphic facilitator can work with artists from different disciplines (actors, dancers etc)?

Those are a few that stick in my head, though there were many more.
I also think they'll be a short film from the night.

My self and Josh Knowles scribed the first ten minutes of the event.

Surrey Enquiry Schools Reflection and Review day

A pretty intense job, with sixteen different schools presenting for three minutes each, with me in the background frantically scribbling with pen and pencil, try to keep up.

Children's Services East Sussex

On monday I took part in a conference about children's participation, run by East Sussex children's services.
As well as a capturing the day's conversations and discussions, I also worked with some young people to create some small cartoons to show good and bad examples of participation. The kids were asked to draw storyboards for me, which I turned into large cartoons which they could feedback to the adults at the event.
It all went down very well.

I'm not really into superhero comics, the one exception being Hellboy. I do the love the stories, I'm a real sucker for all those references to old myths and folklore, but mainly I love Mignola's caravaggian (is that a really word? - I think not) use of light and shade and crisp lines.

Anyhoo, between working hard and having a young baby to look after, I seem to have very little time to do much in the way of practice when it comes to drawing.

This is something I'm trying to rectify. I've started by doing some studies based on Mike's work. The top three are copied from his seed of destruction and the other three are characters from the kids book I'm working on.

I wasn't exactly trying to emulate his style (i'm not really good enough to do that) but to use that idea of high contrast that he makes look so effortless. Mine seem somewhat more laboured in comparison to his (I blame falmouth college of arts for not having a life drawing class as part of their fine art course - and me for not fighting to get one started).

So you may have noticed that i haven't been posting much recently. I've been so rushed off my feet with actual paid work that i've had no time to create anything of my own. Also most of the work is confidential so i can't post it here, grrrrrrr!
Here are a few bits i can post, with all the content removed as usual. The first two were drawn live during a workshop and then coloured back at the office. The third was thrown together at break neck speed and is based around images that were originally part of a live scribe session. The last is a risk elephant, go figure!

So the guys over at purple monster asked me to draw them some headless cartoons, they were going to use them during some events they're running over the summer.
Here are the headless drawings and some examples i did for them with real heads inserted onto top (which is what they were using them for, kinda like those thing you might pose behind at the seaside, but digital).

Although I use photoshop all the time to colour images and often use a drawing tablet, I very rarely draw digitally. The disconnect between drawing on the tablet and it appearing on the screen has always made it a less than enjoyable experience. However i've had a couple of chances recently to use an ipad. I've been using Adobe Ideas which allows you draw directly onto the screen using your finger. Suddenly the idea of drawing in a totally digital manner doesn't seem so unappealing, and with the use of a stylus to increase accuracy could be a really practically way of working (especially for commercial projects with a rushed deadline, and for remote graphic facilitation).
I don't think it'll ever totally replace hand drawing for me (i like pens and paper too much), but i can see all kinds of opportunities for using this method of working.

I've just arrived home from a fleeting visit to China, a country i've not visited before, in fact the first time i've even been to Asia. I thought it was a wonderful city, safe and modern, though to tell you the truth between the meetings, workshops and meals with the clients, i didn't get much of a chance to explore. And when I did get a few hours of freedom, the heavens opened and the fog descended, not the best weather for outdoor sketching.
Although I had a great time and the chinese people were uber friendly, Shanghai seems so western I don't feel like I saw much of the really China - but i'd love to return (anybody want to pay for my ticket?!)

Nothing Like Australia

So i did an event last night for the Australian tourist board. Bit of a strange one, as after an hour it turned into a bit of a school disco. Trying to talk to people about Australia proved pretty hard with Lady GaGa pumping in the background.
Anyway i think it looks pretty good for the situation in which it was created.
